We melt and pour, and we say so
On bought bases, borrowed credibility, and why the shape is the whole point.

We make melt-and-pour soap. We buy a glycerin base, melt it, blend our own things into it, and pour it into a mould. We do not mix oils with lye and we do not make the base from scratch.
That paragraph is the one most brands in this category leave out, and leaving it out works, because the language everyone borrows online is cold-process language. Nobody has to claim anything. You just describe your soap in the vocabulary of a process you do not use, and the reader does the rest of the work themselves. We would rather not. Anyone who has actually made soap can tell which one this is by looking at it, and a brand caught implying otherwise has spent the only thing it really owns.
What actually happens
The base — shea, clear, or goat milk depending on the bar — goes into the pot and comes up to about 60°C. Sixty is not a decorative number. Past it the glycerin scorches, and a scorched base yellows a fortnight later in your bathroom rather than in our workshop, which is the worst possible place to discover it.
Then the pot comes off the heat, and only then do the clays, the cold-pressed oils, the botanicals and the fragrance go in. That order matters more than anything else we do. Carrot seed oil, neem, rose absolute — everything worth paying for in a bar of soap is something heat wrecks. So it is added last, into a pot that is already cooling.
It goes into the mould one at a time, because a hand holds one jug. Three or four hours later it is set, and it is finished. There is no rack. Nothing waits anywhere. What we poured this week is what we sell this week, which is the opposite of the story we could tell, and it happens to be true.
The thing it can do that the other one cannot
Look at what is actually in this shop. A transparent prism. A donut with a glaze on it. A letter of the alphabet, in a size a child can hold. Nine hearts in a jar. An elephant in pastel shea for someone three weeks old.
None of those can be made cold process. Cold process saponifies into an opaque loaf in a wooden box, and a loaf gets cut with a wire, and a wire cuts rectangles. It is a beautiful method and it makes bars — good ones, only ever bars. Our range is shape-led from end to end. The method is not a compromise we settled for. It is the only method that makes the things we sell.
Cold process makes a loaf, and a wire makes it bars. Nobody ever cut a donut off a loaf.
Three more things that are true
- The glycerin stays. A melt-and-pour base is glycerin-rich by design; in a cold-process loaf the glycerin is a by-product spread thin through the whole thing. Ours is the reason the bar feels how it feels — and the reason it beads in a monsoon.
- There is no lye in the room. We do not keep sodium hydroxide in a small workshop with people in it. That is a safety decision, we made it on purpose, and we are not embarrassed by it.
- Nothing is stale. No rack, no month, no back stock going quietly soft in a corner. Poured this week, wrapped this week, gone this week.
The part we do not get to claim
We did not make the base. Someone else saponified it, at a scale and with equipment we do not have, and they did it better than we would in a room this size. What is ours is the formulation, the colour, the shape and the pour — which is a real craft, takes years to get good at, and is most of what you are looking at when you look at one of these bars. It is simply not all of it, and the difference between saying that and not saying it is the whole brand.
So: if what you want is a cold-process bar, there are people in this country who make superb ones and we would genuinely rather you bought theirs than were disappointed by ours. If what you want is a soap shaped like a croissant that also happens to be made properly, that is us.
What this costs us
It would be convenient to tell you a batch takes a month. It does not — it takes an afternoon. What we run out of is hands and moulds. Sixty to a batch, one jug to a hand, one mould filled at a time, and there are only so many moulds in the room. Six hundred alphabet letters for a school order is not a chemistry problem, it is a fortnight of somebody's arms. That is the real constraint, it is a duller one, and it is the one we have.
